Mrs. Jepson’s Online Learning 💙
First and foremost I want to just tell all of you who are going to start this journey of online/home schooling with your child that you can so do this! It’s not all going to be super fun or easy but the more positive you are about it the more positive your child will be and the more likely they will show interest in what we are trying to teach them! Remember, I am just a phone call, email, or message away. Your children have been doing this for over 120 days. They know what they are doing. Let them take the lead if they are able. Research shows that you learn the best when you are able to teach others. I strongly recommend making a visual for your child of a daily schedule of what you are going to do for the day. Visuals work best with children. Keeping their “school days” as routine and normal as possible will really keep them on track and make it easier on you! Please include time for them to play, time on their iPads or devices, time for outdoor play, art activities, snacks, brain breaks, exercise, etc. All of these things are just as important as the school and book work. I will be calling to check in with students that are in my home room periodically and Ms. Kohli will be calling to check in on her students. I will be reaching out via dojo, facebook, or text to check in on how everyone is doing in both classes.
As far as the Eureka math work goes it will make the most sense to keep working on a lesson a day. A typical lesson should take you about 30-45 minutes and then homework time later on. A lesson includes work from their Practice math book (these are called sprints), and the lesson in their Learn math book. After you are finished with the lesson portion students should complete their exit ticket independently. This is what I use to get a good read of whether or not your child understood the lesson. Because we are unsure of what we are going to be asked to do for 4th quarter grades and because we are unsure of how long this is going to last I ask you to please keep your child’s exit tickets for me.
When there is a sprint in the lesson there will always be 2 sprints..an A and a B. Please give your child 90 seconds to complete as much of sprint A as they can. Check it and repeat immediately after with sprint B. Students are not expected to complete every problem on the page. The goal is to try to do better on sprint B than they did on sprint A..even if it is only by 1 problem.
Don’t panic if it takes you much longer or less time than that. Everyone will find their groove and whatever you are doing will work. Remember, every child is different. I recommend collaborating with one of your child’s friends but again please don’t panic if that parent is doing something differently or if they are needing less or more time. Have faith in yourself and your child!
Each week I will update the plans on this website so you will know your game plan for the week. Throughout this crazy time please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. Like I said, I will be in constant contact with you. I want to try to keep everything as “normal” as possible for your children.
I am praying that this will all be over soon and I can get back to my kids. Please let them know I am thinking of them, I miss them, I love them, and I will be talking with them soon! 💙
Love, Mrs. Jepson 😊
